Kanawha Valley Heart Specialists

This new 40,000 square foot medical office building serving a group of regional cardiologists is located adjacent to the existing Thomas Memorial Hospital campus in South Charleston. The building placement and site design maximizes the development opportunities of a great parcel along the Kanawha River, with the doctors’ goals of appropriate patient drop-off areas, public entry addressing MacCorkle Avenue, and private outdoor space on the river.

The first floor spaces are primarily dedicated to a cardio-rehabilitation center with a heart-healthy café space and expansive windows with views to the river. The owner’s medical offices occupy the entire second floor and are arranged in a highly efficient care-centered grouping of exam rooms and medical workstations, with specialized spaces and equipment for testing and imaging located at the second floor perimeter. The upper two floors of the building are developed for medical or professional office space and are served by two large-format medical elevators, exit stairs, and public restrooms.

The building shell design is predicated on the notion of simplicity and carries a strong visual connection to the recent architectural developments on the Thomas Hospital campus. In as much as the Kanawha Valley Heart Specialist Group strengthens the umbrella of care available in the South Charleston community, their medical office building is a direct reinforcement to and reflection of an already cohesive medical complex, and appropriately builds on the palette of form, character, materiality, and detailing that defines Thomas Hospital. The project appropriately addresses context, budget, and program and, more importantly, becomes an abstraction of the project owners themselves.
